Modern surveys in Europe and the United States show red is also the color most commonly associated with heat, activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love, and joy. Since red is the color of blood, it has historically been associated with sacrifice, danger, and courage. It was adopted by North Vietnam in 1954, and by all of Vietnam in 1975. Communist China adopted the red flag following the Chinese Revolution of 1949. Red became a symbolic color of communism and socialism Soviet Russia adopted a red flag following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, until the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. The 19th century brought the introduction of the first synthetic red dyes, which replaced the traditional dyes. : 60–61 In the Renaissance, the brilliant red costumes for the nobility and wealthy were dyed with kermes and cochineal. It was also an important color in China, where it was used to color early pottery and later the gates and walls of palaces. The Ancient Egyptians and Mayans colored their faces red in ceremonies Roman generals had their bodies colored red to celebrate victories. Red pigment made from ochre was one of the first colors used in prehistoric art. Reds range from the brilliant yellow-tinged scarlet and vermillion to bluish-red crimson, and vary in shade from the pale red pink to the dark red burgundy. It is a primary color in the RGB color model and a secondary color (made from magenta and yellow) in the CMYK color model, and is the complementary color of cyan. It has a dominant wavelength of approximately 625–740 nanometres. Red is the color at the long wavelength end of the visible spectrum of light, next to orange and opposite violet. If you’re interested in learning more about “positive punishment,” make sure to read our article, “ Positive Punishment: Adding Consequences to Change Your Child’s Behavior.” What is negative punishment? These two tactics are referred to as “positive punishment” and “negative punishment,” respectively.įor the purposes of this article, we’ll focus on explaining what “negative punishment” is and how you can implement it. After your child acts out, you can either add an undesirable consequence (e.g., a chore), or you can take away a desired stimulus (e.g., dessert). If you want to eliminate a particular behavior, there are two different ways you can go about doing this. By adding or subtracting desirable or undesirable consequences, you can then strengthen the behaviors you want (also known as “reinforcement”), and eliminate the behaviors you don’t (a.k.a. Skinner, a behavioral psychologist who developed a theory of learning known as “ operant conditioning.” This theory claims that we learn “good” and “bad” behaviors by creating associations between a behavior and its consequences. (In fact, most experts caution that punishments like spanking can cause more harm than good.) Within the context of parenting, it’s important to note that the term “punishment” doesn’t imply that the consequence should be harmful. The goal for this technique is to eventually eliminate the behavior completely. What is “punishment”?Īt a high level, “punishment” is a process of learning by which an undesirable behavior is followed by some kind of consequence that’s intended to decrease the likelihood of that behavior happening again. This parenting technique, when used correctly, can be an effective tool that alters your child’s conduct for the better. This article will explain the concepts of “punishment” - and of “negative punishment,” specifically - and will show you how you can incorporate it into your own parenting style. How? You do this by (temporarily) taking away something that your child likes or enjoys. Although it sounds scary and ominous, negative punishment is simply a method by which you can reduce (or even eliminate) an undesirable behavior. Negative punishment could be one way to address this issue. And with so many different parenting techniques out there, it’s hard to figure out which one will work best for your child. No matter whether you’re a parent, babysitter, nanny, or daycare worker, we’ve all been there - scratching our heads, desperately racking our brains for the right solution to get our children to play nice. Your child is acting out, and it seems like nothing you say or do will curb their exasperating behavior. Sound familiar? Which obviously is not what it was 10, 15 years ago, when you could actually really sell a lot of albums. The one area that we don’t control the master recording is simply in the phonograph-recording area. But he retained for himself - obviously, we still own these master-recording rights for movies, television, toys, commercials. In the late ’60s, when he had decided he had done everything with the Chipmunks he wanted to do, he gave back then Liberty Records, now Capitol-EMI, the phonograph rights to those masters. I didn’t realize the connection between your dad and Gordy. And Berry Gordy, when he founded Motown, he had mentioned over the years, “Well, when I found out that Ross Bagdasarian could own his own masters, I went from writing songs for people to developing a record label so I could own those masters, as Ross Bagdasarian had done.” That was something that no artist was really doing back then. My dad was one of the first folks - you’re talking about in the ’50s - that not only owned the publishing rights to the song but he also owned the master itself. Parents understand how frustrated and exasperated Dave would be with Alvin, and kids love identifying with Alvin because he’s got that spunk and that sass and he’s not afraid to go, “Hold on a second.” Just that little rebellious, mischievous nature. We would hear not only the charm of the song but the personality of Alvin, talking back to him, as only a four-or-five-inch tiny chipmunk could do to a large man. I am pulled back to 1958, with my brother and sister and I being called into my dad’s den, where he would record these demos before he went into the studio to do a more polished version. What do you hear in “The Chipmunk Song” that nobody else does? “And here we are, almost 50 years later, trying to come up with the next new idea for Alvin and the Chipmunks, from TV shows to movies to another TV series that we just finished last year,” says Bagdasarian, 74, in a phone interview marking the song’s 65th anniversary. Early on, the couple intended to make original films and shows, but they moved in the Chipmunks direction with Chipmunk Punk. Plus, “The Chipmunk Song” has sold nearly 665,000 digital tracks, according to Luminate, and Bagdasarian says the Chipmunks have sold 50 million albums in their history, from 1965’s Chipmunks A Go-Go to 1980’s Chipmunk Punk.Īlong with Karman, Bagdasarian - who has a law degree from Southwestern Law School - runs Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Bagdasarian Productions, which they started in 1981. Last December alone, the track streamed 10.4 million times. streams, more than half of which have come in November-December of the last five years, according to Luminate. It has racked up 112.4 million total on-demand U.S. (He relinquished the master rights in the late ‘60s.) Billboard estimates the holiday track that started it all brings in $300,000 in annual revenue for the master recording and publishing. The senior Bagdasarian had been shrewd enough to initially retain all the rights to the shockingly lucrative holiday tune: master recording, publishing and product licensing. “It wasn’t just that it was a song,” says Bagdasarian, who, with his wife, Janice Karman, produced the films and voiced some of the chipmunks. Beginning with 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, the four theatrical live-action Chipmunks films have grossed a domestic $656 million combined, according to Box Office Mojo, and nearly $1.4 billion worldwide. The potent holiday-season earworm evolved over the decades into a cartoon empire, encompassing blockbuster films and their soundtracks, animated TV series, Taylor Swift-style re-recordings, one platinum-selling album (the Alvin and the Chipmunksmovie soundtrack), one gold-selling album (the Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel soundtrack), concerts, musicals and dozens of branded toys, blankets, party favors and video games. The 100 Best Christmas Songs of All Time: Staff List I then switched it Pennzoil Platinum full-synthetic 5w-20 and my oil consumption dropped considerably. My 1.6 used quite a bit of oil on the Motorcraft, and even more on the Valvoline. Second, regarding my experience with motor oil and the 1.6, and without turning this into a BITOG thread, I have used Motorcraft semi-synthetic 5w-30 and 5w-20, and I have used Valvoline MaxLife semi-synthetic 5w-20 semi-synthetic and full-synthetic 5w-20. If you were actually trying to nail down the issue you would study if the car is consuming oil and then experiment with different grades and synthetic or non-synthetic oils to see if you can change the amount of consumption. This issue being blamed on mileage only is a huge generalization. I feel compelled to add my two cents since two trends in this thread are raising red flags.įirst, judging by this thread since my 1.6 Ecoboost Escape has 223,000 miles on it, the engine must be about ready to explode the next time I start it, or fall out of the car. Blue smoke in the exhaust is a classic sign that an engine is burning too much oil. The amount of oil used is still acceptable, but by the time it reaches a quart of more in 500 miles it's using a LOT of oil. Using a quart of oil every 1,000 to 1,500 miles is not unusual for a high mileage engine. But as the miles accumulate, wear and oil consumption naturally go up. Most new engines today use less than half a quart of oil in 3,000 to 5,000 miles. įound this as a general guideline.Įngine oil consumption is a problem nobody wants. How much oil you have to refill the oil level to full and how many miles will give you your answer. Not sure what's considered "normal" with the new engines that use synthetic oil, but I think the older engines using regular oil a quart every 1000 miles was still considered "acceptable and normal oil consumption". But to determine if the engine has to much wear would be to make sure your oil level is full, write down the mileage, and see how often you have to add oil between oil changes. You mention you see "a large plume of blueish smoke on start up in the morning". I switched to Pennzoil, same viscosity, but I seemed to get about 1500 miles before I had to add a quart. But I always had to add that quart of oil. Never seen blue smoke, never showed signs of burning oil. When I hit about 70,000 miles I was having to add a quart of oil about every 1000 miles. Looked like it came off the showroom floor. I had my 2002 Escape, bought it in 2009 from 1 owner, it had 54,000 miles. Just kidding about the "worn out big time". At that mileage finding the real issue like possibly seals, you fix that, a few months later the rings could show wear and that would cause it to smoke again. Blue smoke on start up usually means valve seals or worn valve guides. Plus, they’re the only “fast food” restaurant that I know of with fried okra!) In that letter, Tolkien was comparing Sam and Aragorn exclusively, and talking about the theme of Love / how it serves to highlight a bigger element that is central to the book: simple lives and small hands being the focus of the story. Yep, this letter keeps being quoted as a proof that Sam is the hero, but I will die on the hill that it's a misinterpretation due to the very specific context of that quote! Tolkien did call Sam the 'chief hero' in another letter, but I don't think that necessarily places Sam above Frodo. The category of 'saint' doesn't really exist in his world, but it would, of course, have been deeply important to Tolkien as a Catholic. I guess you could say that, by the end, he's somewhere between a saint and a prophet. I think Frodo transcends the category of 'hero' and ends up in a one person category of his own, which I'd hesitate to put a clear label on. He hits 'hero' status pretty early on in the book in his defiance of the Nazgul at Weathertop and at the Ford, but Tolkien takes things much further than that. His spiritual stature and wisdom grows as his physical strength and even mental stability are broken down. The films capture the 'broken down' part of this, but not the concomitant growth in Frodo, which is complex and pretty distinctive in the book. The spectacle of this hobbit getting the better of a maia, through his wisdom and mercy, not through force, is one of the most extraordinary in the book.Īs to whether he is the hero of the story: Tolkien did call Sam the 'chief hero' in another letter, but I don't think that necessarily places Sam above Frodo - their greatness comes in different forms and being a 'hero' in the conventional sense isn't the only sort of greatness in Tolkien's work.Ī study of a hobbit broken by a burden of fear and horror - broken down, and in the end made into something quite different. His rejection of violence in the end of the book is also so impressive. "When things are in danger, someone has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them." But he's so gracious about it at the end and tells Sam: In the end he gives so much and gets back so little, at least in comparison to other heroic characters. In the least showy, but perhaps the most difficult, way possible, Frodo is utterly extraordinary. In Mordor, the Ring strips him of all tangible memories of why he's doing this (the Shire, the ordinary good things in the world), and yet he keeps going. He has no real hope of success (in a draft Tolkien had Gandalf describe him as "endurance beyond hope"), but he keeps going. Every step makes it clearer what the Ring is doing to him, but he keeps going. He's not just walking to almost certain death like many other characters - he's walking to the possible corruption of his own soul. But every time I come back to LotR I find him more extraordinary. All it took was for someone to get there.įrodo is oddly underated, even by book readers (the movie scripts do him a great disservice imho). But there is no being on earth that wouldn't fall in the end. Yes, he reached his limit and Sam had to carry him. He was the one that decided to take on the mission, and his resolve never wavered, even when he was captured, hungry and tired. He was one that carried the ring from the Shire to Rivendell. And while that second part is true, honestly, I feel in that bandwagon, Frodo rarely gets the respect he deserves. As a kid and as a teenager, I was well behind the idea that Sam is the real hero of the story, that without him Frodo wouldn't get far. I am now 22 and it still is my favorite film series of all time and the more I grow up and mature, the more I appreciate it I was born in 2000, and ever since then, I was hooked on the series. When I first watched LOTR I was like 7 years old. (Assuming that LOTR has a thing such as a "real hero" in the first place).
